Dick Heatherton on WCBS-FM 101.1 New York | 1978

One great thing about WCBS-FM has always been the incredible consistency about their programming. This sounds much as CBS-FM does today – and perhaps it’s because at this time, in 1978, CBS-FM was formatted more like a Gold-Based AC instead of a pure Oldies station (although, I don’t believe Tavares “It Only Takes A Minute” was ever considered to fit the old AC format back then). To be sure, CBS’s Oldies format was still much in its infancy and was tailored to New York City. But it sounds GREAT here! Dick Heatherton, the “Leader of Lasagnaland” makes for one great personality (and was fondly remembered recently at CBS-FM’s 40th Anniversary celebration).

Newscasts here are done by Bill Gilliam and Hal Simms

This appears to have been recorded in January or February. See if you can pin down the exact date.

New Contributor Rick Hunter’s self-submitted skimmer makes us all yearn for the old 101 WCBS-FM, complete with REAL Oldies music and a roster of the Who’s Who of New York radio broadcasters.

Rick Hunter was less known in the 80s but as this QuickCheck shows, he was a natural talent that was going places. After WCBS, Rick went to Boston and stayed in the Infinity/CBS fold at 103.3 FM… first WMRQ and stayed on through the format change to Oldies WODS as that station’s Afternoon host.

But, we’re talking WCBS-FM here, and Rick fits right in, this particular day filling in for the one and only Max Kinkel! Return with us now to 1986, which many will remember was a time when the World’s Greatest Oldies station actually played CURRENTS in rotation, verified here by the clip of Survivor’s “The Search Is Over”.

As we wait for Rick to send us something from WODS… here he is in an ad for WODS…

Here’s part two of the Dan Ingram aircheck from 3/9/96. About 16 minutes in, you’ll hear Dan’s trademarked signoff featuring “Tri-Fi Drums”, a cut Ingram began using some 35 years prior at 77 WABC. Then the clip moves into Bob Shannon, who mentions that he will be filling in for Norm N. Nite that evening.

“It’s COOLD outside, so layer up… or layer down!”

Best known for his irreverent one-liners, Dan Ingram was one of the most popular and best loved DJ’s in New York history! Here’s Big Dan on his Saturday show on CBS-FM, from one very cold March afternoon in 1996 – still on top of his game!

This aircheck was posted on the one year anniversary of CBS-FM flipping to that ill-fated “Jack-FM” format. While CBS-FM is back (and I’d say better than ever, but who am I?), unfortunately, Dan Ingram isn’t part of it. We hope he is enjoying his retirement!

"Dandy" Dan Daniel hands PM drive to Dan Taylor | December 31, 2002

Often, if not most times in radio, when a DJ disappears either because he quit or was fired, most people never know why until they read about it in the paper. Or hear it through the grapevine. Once in a while, however, there is mention of it on the air.

In one of the most classy turnovers I’ve ever heard, “Dandy” Dan Daniel signs off and hands his afternoon show to Dan Taylor. Both men were friends who had worked together in Country radio, at WHN (1050) and at WYNY (103.5), and there was a deep admiration and respect for one another… and it shows in this 5 minute clip of Daniel’s last full time appearance on WCBS-FM.

Here’s a generous portion of Bobby Jay. In hi-fi quicktime stereo! This was recorded back in June of ’96 around the same time as the Max Kinkel aircheck we’re posting this week.

Not all jocks are smooth, but some have a very distinctive style. And NOBODY sounds like Bobby Jay!

More, from the 90s when WCBS-FM was just enormous!

…”Here’s Michael Jackson. Perhaps he shoulda stopped…”

Not quite 7 months before the format change, Bill Rock was heard filling in for Cousin Bruce Morrow. Rock is topical, funny and in so many ways a perfect choice to fill in for Brucie. Lots of requests, mentions of Wolfman Jack and a large variety of music, which at this point is NOT loaded with a lot of 50s and 60s.

You’ll hear the final set of WCBS-FM jingles played in a modernized Oldies format which included lots of 70s disco, as Infinity broadcasting rushed to push the older music and its aging demos into the background, as advertisers made it known that they didn’t want to buy airtime on stations catering to those over 55 years old. Folly? That’s up for discussion!

Here’s a first…. An exclusive interview with former CBS-FM jock Steve O’Brien! Steve’s been in New York Radio for a long time on such stations as WABC, WYNY and of course CBS-FM! He’s been heard on Sirius Satellite Radio and seen on the TV game show, the $25,000 Pyramid!

This is a real interview! Steve and I were in contact for awhile ever since he did our 3rd segment of Musicradio 77 Recreated for New Years Eve 2005, and he graciously donated a bit of his time to give all of us a bit of insight into his career and what it was like to be a jock at the Golden 101!

Did you know SOB was at CBS-FM for 15 years! It might not be as long as Don K. Reed but 15 years is a long time for a dj to be at any station anywhere. And, as Steve says, the longevity of the personalities on CBS-FM was a big factor in the station’s success.

So… listen now as we chat with one true radio great – Steve O’Brien from 101 CBS-FM!

Want a really good laugh? I thought I’d heard almost every one-liner out there but this one aircheck from Big Dan tops anything I’ve heard from him, even better than anything I heard him do at WABC! There’s a joke for every song, live commercial or tidbit Dan talks about, and every one is FUNNY!

There’s a good reason why then WCBS-FM PD Joe McCoy hired Dan Ingram… and listen to this 30 minutes of pure gold to find out what it was. Not only is this a great aircheck to help us commemorate the greatest Oldies station ever, its also one of the very best airchecks we’ve posted here in a very long time.

Mega thanks to former New Yorker Steve Green, who now lives in Texas for sending this and a few other CBS-FM airchecks along!

Its been said that WCBS-FM began to lose its music focus in the few years leading up to the station’s inevitable demise (was it really inevitable? CBS brass thought so). Even if that’s a true statement, the talent was always right on the mark!

Here’s a glimpse of our favorite Oldies station with it’s core air talent still intact. What CBS/Viacom corporate never understood fully, it was the air personalities and the way this format was presented that made it all so wonderful. The music was secondary and always could have been tweaked. So, from 2003 by numerous requests for more CBS-FM…. here you go, courtesy of Justin Case (sorry for the ommission!).

Marc Somers, 101.1 WCBS-FM New York | December 22, 1988

Mark Somers sits in for the vacationing Ron Lundy a couple of days before Christmas, 1988. The “Golden 101″ is in it’s prime, playing the hits from the late 50s right up into the 1980s, although the 80s cuts are not rotated in as frequently as the 60s/70s material.

CBS-FM has a wide playlist at this point in time. The reverb is ON, and this has to be one of the best recordings of CBS-FM we’ve ever received, most likely recorded on a quality stereo system. Keep in mind, in 1988 there was no “HD” white noise on the signal, and true audiophiles had excellent recording equipment, not to mention the TLC put into the processing and transmitting equipment by the engineers.

There are a few Christmas songs in rotation, but its certainly not the saturation that stations do today. CBS-FM stays true to the Oldies format. You’ll hear two complete stop sets (commercial breaks) which helps put listeners in the proper time setting.

Dick Bartley, "Saturday Night Classic Countdown"; 101.1 WCBS-FM New York | February 13, 2011

Contributor Scott Lowe gave us this perfect recording of Dick Bartley’s “Classic Countdown” on CBS-FM. One of the really cool features of this is the fact that Bartley did this show for CBS-FM, and it’s not some syndicated show that he did generically. But, Dick Bartley is… himself. He comes across professional, if not just factual.

This countdown was from this particular week (Valentine’s Day Weekend) in 1977. Your webmaster scop

Listeners to Classic Hits stations today will be very familiar with most of the songs heard on this countdown, but one thing is worth noting. There are some songs which charted high in 1977, which get almost NO radio airplay today. Programmers and Consultants will say that's because the songs don't 'test' well. One has to wonder just how many people get asked to participate in a music test. I know of absolutely NOBODY in or out of radio who has ever participated in a test, so how do they really figure out what songs people like or dislike? Maybe the so called experts 'lie'? Nah. Couldn't be.

Bill Brown began his tenure at the Golden 101 in 1969 and stayed with CBS-FM for 36 years! He was displaced in 2005, when the station ditched Oldies for the failed “Jack-FM” Variety Hits format which lasted just under two years.

Brown only goes by his first name, Bill. His is a warm personality, with a great set of pipes… back when voice tone mattered!

Once again, notice how wide the playlist is. From Bobby Darin’s “Somewhere Beyond The Sea” with it’s swing sound, to Aretha’s then-recent hit “Who’s Zoomin’ Who?”, CBS-FM managed to play it all, and still maintain its Oldies format.

This aircheck demonstrates why, 101.1 WCBS-FM was and still IS the ‘gold standard’ by which all other Oldies/Classic Hits stations are judged.

Courtesy of Big Apple Airchecks, here’s a high-quality aircheck of our good friend Steve O’Brien, apparently recorded right after the New York Yankees won the World Series of Baseball. The century is winding down, its a balmy day (near 70 degrees) in the Big Apple, and WCBS-FM is still New York’s OLDIES station, playing the music of the 50s, 60s and 70s with an occasional 80s tune. Its the station everybody grew up with before “Jack” came along in 2005 and spoiled the party for a while…

Return of a Legend: Scott Shannon's First Show; 101.1 WCBS-FM New York, Part 1 | March 3, 2014

Starting out much the way WHTZ “Z-100″ did in 1983, legendary programmer, jock and superb morning host Scott Shannon returns to wake New Yorkers after a one week break following his ‘retirement’ from 23 years in Mornings at WPLJ. What a welcome Shannon gets! CBS-FM re-did it’s imaging, new JAM jingles to recreate the early Z-100 sound and the cast and crew whooping it up for perhaps the only personality with a larger impact on New York radio than Dan Ingram!

There really are few words we could write that can describe Scott Shannon’s first day at CBS-FM, so we’d rather you just listen and enjoy what will undoubtedly become a long running tradition on the one radio station that still ‘gets’ it – WCBS-FM 101.1!

Continuing where Part 1 left off, Scott Shannon is given a huge welcome as the new host of the WCBS-FM Morning show!

WCBS-FM has come a long way from the days when “Jack” put an end to the Oldies of the 50s and 60s, and what wasn’t even mentioned on this first day (why would they?), there once was another ‘Shannon’ in the building – Bob Shannon, who re-signed on the Classic Hits version of CBS-FM only a few short years ago. Now, things have come full circle. Joe Nolan gives a beautiful welcome to his former Z100 partner. Joe’s CBS-FM’s Traffic guy. More antics from Weather guy “Mr. G”.

This portion of the Scott Shannon in the Morning show becomes a bit more music intensive after the 9:00 hour, but that doesn’t stop him from doing a couple more interviews. John Bon Jovi checks in to do a 10 minute bit with Shannon, as does Monkees frontman, and short time morning host of the ‘old’ WCBS-FM morning show, Mickey Dolenz! Dolenz was ousted when “Jack” came along.

In all, the final two hours of this first morning show are scoped down to just one hour for presentation, commercials and full songs removed for copyright reasons. “And now, ladies and gentlemen, serving the universe from the Greatest City in the world…. Scott Shannon, on WCBS-FM and H-D1 New York.. always on Radio.com!”
